Job Description:
Designs complex detailed drawings, sketches, and profiles used in the planning or construction of various structural steel and barge design. Works as directed to conceive of or create form and design variations for consideration. Analyzes plans for potential cost and engineering consideration. Draws preliminary sketches of proposed projects utilizing Pro Nest CAD/CAM or other PC technology.
Senior Designer
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Prepare/ supervise bid and general arrangement drawings for prospective customer opportunities
- Weight of steel components and assemblies
- Prepare schedule for completion of engineering package by possessing a strong working knowledge of:
- Welded construction
- Fitting of steel plates and shapes
- Forming of steel plates and shapes
- Manufacturing process related to the steel plate and shape construction
- Acts as a liaison between maintenance, production, operations, and facilities to ensue drawing accuracy
- Create shop drawings using good manufacturing practices
- Have the knowledge to nest shapes into plates for cutting on a CNC Plasma machines
- Create the list of steel plates and shapes required to build barges
- Skilled at using 2D (AutoCAD) and 3D (Inventor) software, Excel and MS Word
- Resolve problems with an eye towards maintaining schedules, minimizing disruptions and minimizing cost impact
- Maintains dynamic communication with contractors, clients, shop personnel and inspectors
- Good listening skills to translate customer inquiries into positive solutions
- Interpret customer spec’s and translate into approval drawing
- Able to schedule their tasks with those of subordinates, create, and maintain schedules
- Provide internal and external customers with accurate information
- Constantly provide a proactive approach and insight that fosters good communication and minimizes rework or scrap
- Assist in the operation of cost estimates by furnishing weights and hours

- Environment is that of a heavy industrial worksite.
- Outdoor elements are a factor. Extreme weather conditions such as heat and cold
- Exposure to air particles such as dust and chemicals
- Exposure to loud, penetrating noises in some work areas
- Proper personal protective equipment is required such as, steel toed or metatarsal boots, ear plugs/ear muffs, safety glasses, pants, and hard hats

Education Requirements:
- Technical associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree preferred with ten years of experience; 15 years structural steel design experience if no degree.
- Previous work experience in a heavy industrial or construction environment is preferred
